Ohio Legislators Pass Revamped Safe Haven Laws for Unwanted Children

Lawmakers in Ohio have agreed to a new plan and approach in protecting newborn children of parents who do not wish to care for these infants.  Currently, to pass the bill, a signature from Governor Ted Strickland is the only requirement for the new Ohio Safe Haven Laws to go into effect.  The Safe Haven Law proposed in Ohio would now allow parents of newborn children up the age of one month to leave these children at local hospitals, fire stations, or police stations and not face criminal charges for their actions.  Since a similar law allowing parents to drop off children up to three days old was passed in Ohio in 2001, the state reports that fifty newborns have been left at these safe havens across the state.

If the Ohio governor agrees to sign the bill, the new Safe Haven Laws in Ohio will take ninety (90) days before becoming effective.  For parents concerned regarding the custody of their children, or concerned about being able to provide for the welfare of their children, the new Safe Haven Law provides ample time for parents to make the difficult decision regarding the future of their newborns.  If you or someone you know has more questions regarding the custody or support of a child, contact Kelly Morgan, attorney at law, in the Columbus, Ohio area today.

In divorce actions, mediators often are involved in custody and visitation disputes.
In some jurisdictions (particularly large urban areas), courts require mediation of custody and visitation disputes. The mother and father must talk with a court-appointed mediator to try to resolve the problem before putting their case before a judge. The mediator cannot force a resolution, but the parties can be told to try mediation before coming to court to ask a judge to decide the issue.
